Charter School Application Reviews

In Tennessee, charter schools are public schools operated by independent governing bodies, as approved by the boards of education of local education agencies. TCA §49-13-104 defines “public charter school” as a public school in the state of Tennessee that is established and operating under the terms of a charter agreement and in accordance with this chapter. Local boards are charged with ensuring that only charter schools that open and remain open are meeting the needs of their students. Financial performance is one aspect of the authorization process that local boards monitor to ensure compliance.

With the many Tennessee state laws and State Board of Education Rules and Regulations surrounding charter schools, financial
performance, including proper budgeting for start-up charter schools, can be overwhelming. I can help with this monitoring process by reviewing the financial and related sections of charter school applications. My reviews focus on answering two (2) vitally important questions: (1) to determine if the charter schools financial plans as set forth within its application coincide with budget projections, and (2) to determine if the budget projections are sound and reasonable.
